The Fashion Souk 2009 – present day

The Fashion Souk market-style-event was established in its monthly format as part of Belfast City Council’s Sunday in the City Initiative in February 2010, a big thanks to Adam Turkington who made it possible. With The Ulster Hall on board this really was the golden era with more than 60 stalls every month and up to 1,000 visitors!

This unique shopping experience introduced Belfast to the concept of ‘smarter’ shopping, destigmatising second-hand items and promoting locally crafted fashion & accessories. With regular fashion shows, workshop and craft demonstrations and talks The Fashion Souk paved the way for the upcycling trend that has hit our high street.

Boutique Souk

Boutique Souk, brainchild of Alyson was the forerunner of the current Studio Souk. The Boutique combined retail and workshop space and was made entirely from recycled materials. Located in the heart of Belfast city centre with mall space for the market-style shopping event and separate office for the daily running of the business.

Stocking local designers, pre-loved designer wear and vintage goods the Boutique had sewing tables and  for the first time offered local designer/makers an interactive retail space and the opportunity to sell directly to their target market without the associated overheads.

The project was cut short when the shopping complex we were part of went under and it was at this time Alyson started looking for other venues and worked to reestablish links with Spires Mall after a packed Christmas event in November 2011.

This series of more than 40 free workshops aim was to raise recycling awareness amongst 18 – 25 year olds and even better the students got to take their completed works home after the workshops, so they benefited in a practical way by restyling furniture for their flats.

Belfast Cycle Chic

Alyson and her team created Belfast’s first ever Cycle Chic event and transformed cyclists from Cycle Geek to Cycle Chic proving you can look suitably stylish and exotic on two wheels.

The event featured a catwalk on wheels along with highlights from hit cycle documentary Beauty and the Bike.
Part of Bike Fortnight, our Cycle Chic Fashion Show proves you don’t need to forfeit fashion over function when you swap four wheels for two.
Bellaire provided hair and makeup while Bike Dock supplied the gear! Ethical boutique Spiral Threads, Bean Boutique, Belfast Rain and the Rusty Zip showcased cycle chic looks that take ladies from day to evening without a taxi in sight.
Cycle Chic is funded by Travelwise NI, NICI and CTC.

Unique Boutique

Following on from our hugely successful Stitch and Style fashion events funded by, and in partnership with Belfast City Council  it was time to turn our attentions to giving homes a ‘green’ makeover.

On Wednesday, June 2, the now Wagamamas unit of  Victoria Square shopping centre was transformed into a ‘Unique Boutique’ as part of the city’s annual Waste Week, giving visitors tips on how to refresh, restyle and rethink your home – without literally costing the earth.

The Fashion Souk… begins in 2009

Wanting to set the tone for fashion and lifestyle events in Belfast Alyson created an event in Blick Studios that was unlike any other and set the wheels in motion for The Fashion Souk coming to life.

A secret event with champagne and sushi this fashion show – complete with a dimly lit decadent souk style lounge – saw spectators get up-close-and personal with models strutting their stuff on a floor-level catwalk and in a very cool glass roofed atrium.

It was the first ever event to bring together exclusively local talent and a big thank you goes to all designers involved as well as Paul Stafford hair and Joanne Gray MUA.

Stitch and Style 2009 – 2010

The Fashion Souk won tenders to create four successful public events for Belfast City Council promoting the Rethink Waste message and educating our communities on how small changes to behaviour can have a big impact on waste.

We went on to create a similar programme of events for Limavady, Castlereagh, Bangor Councils culminating in programme of Rethink Revamp Restyle events and Let’s get Wasted campaign for Rethink Waste NI in 2011/12 across Northern Ireland.
